About Ware Charities

For centuries, Ware Charities has addressed economic hardship in our community. We offer financial support to individuals, families, and local organisations, helping to address a wide range of needs, in the communities of Ware, Wareside, and Thundridge. We recognise that economic hardship is complex; it’s more than a low income, it can be about lacking opportunities, resources, and basic essentials. It's universal ; It can affect anyone at anytime in their life. Even the seemingly secure can feel its hidden effects. It's enduring; the toll can be deep and breed hopelessness, debt stigma and reduce resilience. Children, youth and older people are particularly at risk.

Our main aim as a charity is to reduce economic disadvantage and its impact in the area.

Our History

The origins of Ware Charities trace back over six hundred years to a medieval guild. The charity originally focused on relieving poverty by providing almshouses for those in need, but in more recent years, these did not meet modern standards and have been sold. The charity has been known by different names and amalgamated with other charities over the centuries, but always with the same objectives. Largely funded by legacies, the charity has sizeable assets and an investment portfolio generating annual income.

Trustees

Our trustees recently completed a review of the charity's objectives and gained a better understanding of poverty in the 21st century.
